Remediation for
Lakes and Ponds - Biological Nutrient Removal
What
is Eutro-Clear and how does it work ? Eutro-Clear is a safe and natural product used to improve the quality
of pond and lake water, as well as the water in aquaculture systems.
Eutro-Clear is a made of concentrated blends of bacteria in a dry power form.
These natural bacteria are in a dormant state. Eutro-Clear uses these bacteria
for removing excess nutrients from a eutrophied pond or lake in process called
bioaugmentation.
There
are literally millions of different naturally occurring microbes in our world.
Eutro-Clear uses specific strains of microbes that have been isolated for their
ability to perform highly specific, beneficial functions.
These natural
microbial products contains select facultative bacteria capable of biodegrading
cellulose, lignin, hydrocarbons and other organic pollutants in ponds and
lakes. The microbes reduce the nutrients in the water. Nutrient removal from
the water results is the elimination of algae growth, known as algal blooms.
Other bacteria reduce suspended particulate matter and organic sediment,
reducing bottom sludge. This helps to eliminate foul odors and makes the pond
or lake cleaner. Water clears, water quality improves and by removing the
overload of nutrients, the water returns to a naturally balanced ecosystem.
How is Eutro-Clear
different from chemical or copper treatments ? In many cases, copper sulfate is used as a quick remedy for
unbalanced, out of control pond water conditions. Copper sulfate does produce a
fast result. But the results are temporary, as the copper sulfate does not
address the initial problem of nutrient overload. The algae will bounce back in
a few days.
When copper, as an
inorganic salt, is applied to relatively hard water it rapidly forms
precipitates of copper hydroxide or copper carbonate. When this happens, the
copper is no longer effective as an algicide.
Additionally, application of copper
sulfate adds heavy metals into the environment. Copper sulfate and chelated
copper compounds applied at the recommended rates are lethal to fish eggs and
some species of newly hatched fish.
Copper-Resistant Algae - some type of filamentous algae
can be especially troublesome because they are resistant to normal applications
of copper compounds. Pithophora, is one of them. Algal
blooms should be controlled by decreasing nutrient concentrations in the water
body.
Eutro-Clear is a better choice for
a number of reasons:
- Completely non-toxic to plants,
animals, aquatic life and people.
- Through biological nutrient
removal( BNR), eliminates the cause of algal
blooms
- No harmful residual effects.
- Completely and naturally
biodegradable.
- Long-term effect.
- No applicator license required.
What role
does Oxygen play?
Successful bioremediation of ponds
and lake waters depends on a proper combination of nutrients, oxygen, and
microbes.
While facultative anaerobes may
function in the presence or absence of oxygen, aerobic activity is the
preferred method for many contaminants. When bacteria have available oxygen,
and hence function aerobically, they produce roughly eighteen times as much
energy as anaerobic activity yields. This results in faster, more aggressive
remediation.
An Oxygen Generating Component
provides the optimal dissolved oxygen level to promote and sustain the
microbial populations. When applied in conjunction with Eutro-Clear pond
clarifier, it increases the dissolved oxygen levels in the water allowing the
microbial populations to flourish and start the biological processes.
Specifications:
Natural, microbial based
products containing 50 billion per gram of genus Bacillus and other bacteria
capable of biodegrading cellulose, lignin, hydrocarbon and other organic
pollutants in pond and lake water to reduce algae, cyanobacteria - blue-green
algae, scum, sludge and odor.
There are few
limitations: Bacteria cannot degrade dirt, rock, sand or other inorganic
substances. Probiotics cannot survive in fluctuating extremes of temperature
and pH or when high levels of metals or biocides are present. Otherwise, there
are few limitations.
It also avoids
creating a second environmental problem: disposing of the sludge.
It is essential to
provide adequate mechanical aeration to support the establishment of the
microbial populations. Surface aeration is helpful but is often not enough. We
recommend bottom aeration utilizing a diffused air system.
Eutro-Clear Pond will
typically clear up water in 2 - 12 weeks. Eutro-Clear works best when water
temperatures are between 70 - 100 degrees F.
Eutro-Clear
comes in several formulas:
Eutro-Clear -
Pollutant Removing Formula - Improved sludge remediation - for ponds and lakes
with low levels of contamination. Effective in either salt or fresh water.
Reduces turbidity and improves water clarity. Reduces the potential for
anaerobic conditions and foul odors. To be used as a prophylactic prior to an
outbreak of algae blooms or as a maintenance product after a full probiotic
remediation treatment.
Eutro-Clear Treatments- for heavy contamination and toxic cyanobacteria and algae
blooms in lakes, ponds and canals. For storm water run -off, non-point source
contamination from agricultural areas and lakes that are affected by leachates
from septic systems or industrial areas. Especially formulated to break down
feed wastes, fish manures and organic detritus. Combats problems found in
sludge at the bottom of ponds, lakes and rivers.
Produces higher BOD
levels than Eutro-Clear and should be used were there is adequate oxygenation.
Levels of dissolved oxygen levels (4mg/L or greater) should be maintained.
If ammonia nitrogen is
also high, we recommend the use of Nitro-Clear nitrifying bacteria designed to control
ammonia and nitrite. Nitrifying bacteria is designed to provide a biological
oxidation of ammonia in shrimp/prawn, fish hatchery pond, ornamental koi fish
pond, tropical fish pond, fresh-saltwater and aquarium fish, fish farms,
lobster pens, prawn farms, natural lakes, ponds and rivers. Nitrification is
the biological or biochemical process in which ammonia is oxidized to nitrite,
and nitrite oxidized to nitrate- it requires low BOD/COD levels in high
dissolve oxygen concentrations.
Eutro-Clear Dosing: Several factors affect the application rates of these
products:
- The first is the amount and type of algae in the lake at the time that you
begin treatment.
- Second - To pinpoint the
likely cause of the algae, the amount and type of contamination needs to be
determined. Testing should be done to establish the pH, ammonia/nitrite/nitrate
levels, oxygen levels, and phosphorous levels. Knowing these levels will assist
in determining the product and application rates required.
- Third - point source and
non-point source contamination . Proximity to industrial, agricultural, storm
water run-off or septic waste leachates, use of lawn or garden fertilizers on
the land around the water, will continue to contribute to the nutrient loading
in your pond or lake.
General
application rates - This is entirely dependent on the current contamination
levels and the flow rate of the water.
- Product requirements are based
on per acre / foot of water and the nutrient levels in the water. Applications
can be made when water temperature reaches 50° F. This application should
be made prior to the presence of green water.
- If initial application occurs
when green water and algae is already present, shock dosages will be required
and repeated at 2 - 4 day intervals until there is an improvement in water
clarity. Then revert to a weekly dose then, every 2 week and then to a monthly
maintenance dose once the water is clear.
- During this time, nutrient
levels should continued to be monitored.
- Application should be made in
the late afternoon as the initial period of darkness will favor bacterial
growth over the blue-green algae - cyanobacteria.
